Spice Vision created Rocky Beach, a flexible real-time environment built for virtual production in partnership with Scarab Digital. Designed and assembled in Unreal Engine 5, the scene uses the Lumen rendering engine to deliver natural lighting, dynamic reflections, and high realism directly on an LED stage. This environment provides a believable coastal setting for shoots requiring a rugged shoreline, weathered rock formations, and detailed surf interaction—all fully controllable in real-time.
Environment Design
The Rocky Beach environment was crafted to serve as a versatile coastal backdrop. Using a mix of Megascans assets and custom-modeled rocks, debris, and shoreline elements, our team focused on creating natural-looking formations and believable wet surfaces.
The lighting and atmosphere were carefully tuned in Unreal Engine 5 with Lumen, allowing production teams to adjust time of day, weather conditions, and tide levels instantly while shooting on an LED stage. The environment is optimized to look cinematic and immersive from multiple camera angles, with minimal post work required.
As performance is critical, the entire scene was carefully optimized to maintain real-time frame rates without sacrificing visual fidelity—ensuring smooth playback and high-quality final imagery on set.
